An age-old mystery. An inconvenient spirit. An unlikely romance.

Abigail Parkinson is anxious to rid her inherited home of its troublesome specter. But she cannot convince any legitimate scientist or scholar to investigate. Desperate, she turns to the one man she doesn’t want to ask for help Lord Moreland.

Christian, Viscount Moreland, isn't a scientist or a scholar. The blood of pirates runs in his veins. But he debunked a haunted house, and when summoned to Sibel Hall he vows to solve its secrets—including how to woo the intriguing Miss Parkinson.

I loved this story. The poor hero, Christian, Viscount Moreland, once debunked a haunting that the owners were charging money to view. He happened to open a panel at the back of the bed and found a youth with a hammer caught in the act of pounding under the bed. Since then, due to his friends who had taken him there as a lark, he had become famous far and wide for being an expert on ghostly phenomenon. He had been so inundated with requests for information or help at his London home that he had decided to visit his grandfather at the family seat. And, his business man was instructed to burn all such mail. So he was surprised when one letter got through to him. It had been mailed directly to his family seat where his grandfather was the first to read it. It was from a lady who pleaded with him to help her since she was trying to sell a house but an apparition kept scaring off any potential buyers. His Grandfather felt that Christian couldn't abandon the lady in distress and guilted him into giving in.

So Christian finds himself at a huge old ugly pile of rocks and bricks called Sibel Hall. There are almost no servants since the ghost had scared them off, and only four residents at the decrepit, dusty, mildewy old place. The long term owner had recently died and left the house to his great niece. The other three people living in the house were three "cousins", although the family connections were very vague. The cousins all received a small stipend from the previous owner, and the lady who had written to Christian had received the house but no money to care for it. So she has to sell the house as quickly as possible so she can buy herself a small cottage with the proceeds and live out her life as a spinster where no one would ever want her to wait on them again. Her name was Abigail, and she had been a companion to an elderly great aunt who had taken every opportunity to tell her how charitable she was in allowing her to be her companion while she quietly worked Abigail to death daily.

Abigail hates Christian on sight. In her opinion he can't do anything right. In his thoughts Christian thinks of her as "the governess" because she is so prim, proper, and strict. It doesn't help that she always wears black poorly fitting dresses with her hair pulled back in a tight bun. Christian had never come across a woman who didn't fall at his feet in worship and all his best tricks to charm a lady fall flat. But he is determined to find the cause of the ghostly sightings which always occur in the same place and only when potential buyers are touring the house. In the process Christian fantasizes about getting Abigail out of that black dress and undoing her hair to see if he can get under the facade of "the Governess" and see if there is a real woman hiding there.

There is a lot of frustration as Christian has to drag every clue out of Abigail and her cousins, each one battier than the other. But he won't give up because he doesn't believe in ghosts and he is curious as to what is going on. Especially as he falls in love with Abigail and wants to protect her from whoever is perpetrating this deception.

The story is well written, I don't remember any typos, I'm not an expert but it seems accurate to the time period, and Christian's bright and lively character prevents any of the drama from being maudlin. There are two pre-marital sex scenes but they are not terribly descriptive, Christian's fantasies are a little bit more descriptive. I'd give it a PG-17 rating if it were a movie. The violence is a punched nose--and he deserved it. Only foul language was H**L used twice. It has a great ending.

A Man of Many Talents Deborah Simmons 9780985812584 Books Reviews

I never expect too much from 99 cent books, this one was a great surprise. I usually read more thriller or mystery than romance, this had a great combination of romance and mystery.
is the foundation for this romantic mystery filled with hidden passages, a poetic clue to family treasure, and suspicious relatives.
I enjoyed this read! It had its tricks but ended up being a treat! Usually, there are too many people to keep track of but the author was so clever about setting the scene and only adding those it really needed. I got my HEA, I do love a happy ending with love and possibilities of seeing these characters in another story.
Dry humor, understatement and logical sleuthing make this character study a joy to read. Never saw the final plot twist coming. All in all the laugh-aloud graphs vs real life situational ethics endear this book as a potential reread when I want/need a pick-me-up.
Ghosts and old castles don't always mix ,but when they do just add some old memories and a touch of long forgotten kisses with a touch of people looking for themselves.
I'm surprised that I selected this book--I usually won't take anything that hasn't been reviewed by at least 50 folks and doesn't earn at least a 4. This book deserves that. While there are some refrains that are repeated a little overmuch (the lilac aroma, the surge of lust), it is still a fun read with a bit of mystery and humor. It was a quick, pleasant read with some twists and surprises.
Deborah Simmons writes a great story. Great story with minimal sexual content
