Prufrock and Other Observations Books

"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" was published in 1917 later becoming one of the best known of Eliot's poems. The writing is lyrical, the images mesmerizing. It begins painting its magic with the first lines: "Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky...Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets, The muttering retreats Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels..." The images are visceral and unforgettable. Today T.S. Eliot is still included in studies of literature and poetry. This poem as well as his "The Hollow Men" are two of my favorite poems though I do not pretend to understand all the deeper meanings and historical social commentary. The sound, the lyrical words are satisfying enough.

by its length. There is just enough to remind you of why T.S. Elliot is a favorite, if indeed he is. I'm glad to have Prufrock on my iPad.
Just re-visiting poetry I have enjoyed in my younger years.
How could someone NOT love T.S. Eliot? ;)
I know Elliot is one of the masters. But, I found much of this dense. On the other hand the Four Quartets was outstanding.
T. S. Eliot is my hero. He is, of course, not really British, (born in Missouri, I believe). In recordings of him speaking he sounds like Eyore. But, the man knows his way around a foggy, yellow, cat-like verse or two. Hurrah for Thomas Stearns Eliot.
One hundred years after they appeared, these poems still resonate both in their diction and stance of social criticism. I return again and again to reread Eliot
I have the version, which is unsatisfactory because of jumbling of the lines of Eliot's poetry. If you care about the poet, look elsewhere for a copy of Prufrock. I bought mine a few years ago, and the reader may have improved its performance or the edition here. I've seen more recent versions of poetry that are ok (have seen no Eliot edition). I have found my new Paperwhite to be an improvement over my older reader for poetry, illustrations, tables, etc.
